I Went into the Snake Den and Came Out with...


Snake Den State Park: Do You Dare?

I did!  I went in.  I made discoveries.  I found...nature!

Snake Den State Park is a 1000 acres of woodland, field and historic running farm (Dame Farm) off Hartford Ave. in Johnston.  I started at the trailhead behind the fire station, enjoying the ferns and cooler temps below the trees in late August.

Clearing the trees, flowers appeared.  Here are two native flowers, goldenrod and aster.  Many blame goldenrod for their allergies, but as you can see in the photo, goldenrod is an important source of pollen for pollinators like bees.  As it blooms in late summer/early fall, its presence is even more vital as other flowers stop blooming.  As a plant that needs insects to pollinate it, its pollen is NOT airborne!  The real likely cause of allergies at this time of year?  Ragweed, which pollinates through air-born dust.  So enjoy the goldenrod, even add some to your garden and tell people why!  This New England aster is simple and small, but if you want bigger and more colorful blooms, there are plenty at home improvement and garden stores at this time.  (My favorite are the purple asters.)

It was a dry summer, but the rains finally came.  And with them, mushrooms!

   
The photo at left actually is NOT a mushroom, but Indian pipe weed, a plant without chlorophyl.  I'm not a mushroom expert, but I believe the one on the right is a straw mushroom.  Mushrooms come in a variety of types.  Some have stems, some don't.  Some have gills or "teeth".  Some grow symbiotically with specific trees.  Others grow off decaying wood.  If categorizing by how the mushroom feeds itself, there are four types: saprotrophs, mycorrhizal, parasitic, and endophytes.  Saprotrophs are decomposers, vital to recycling nutrients back into the soil, and include so many edibles: Black trumpet, button, chicken, cremini, hen of the woods, morel, oyster, reishi, shitake...  (Note: just because it's growing on a rotting log, doesn't mean it's edible.  Chicken and hen of the wood also grow on living trees, usually oak or maple.)  Then there's mycorrhizal, which partner with plant roots by wrapping their mycelium around them of by weaving through the root cells, allowing roots to absorb more nutrients and water.  The mushrooms in turn gain access to sugars the plant produces.  Mycorrhizals include chanterelles, porcini, and truffles.  It's not all happy, happy, though.  Parasitic mushrooms will eventually kill their host, some even continuing as saprotrophs.  Most parasitic mushrooms are small and hard to notice, but a few produce spectacular mushrooms to behold, such as the Lion's Mane (supposedly edible AND medicinal).  Some parasitic mushrooms affect insects.  Others, such as Chaga, are being explored as medicines.  (DO NOT TRY THIS YOURSELF!)  Another, the Honey Fungus, even has a bioluminescent variety.  The least understood are the endophytes, who invade plant tissue but do not seem to otherwise harm the plant.  Some fungus change types as they continue their life cycle and this includes endophytes as well.

History and Humble Beginnings Part Two: Slater Mill


Once upon a time, fabric was made and dyed in Pawtucket, RI.  You can see some of the machines from the Industrial Revolution's birth at the Slater Mill on Main St. Now, URI Master Gardener volunteers have recreated gardens similar to those of that time, even using brick and stone from demolished buildings from the turn of last century to make the edges of raised beds and create stairways.  

Native sunflowers stand tall, visited by bees and birds. Kitchen garden crops popular at that time, like pat-a-pan squash, ripen.  In this hot, dry summer, the arugula has already gone to seed, but New Englanders would have saved those seeds for the following year.  Onions were also in this stage, but some fruit trees and gourds were just at their peak.  The garden also includes several medicinal plants common to the time, as well as the "fabric" plants: cotton and flax.

Not much further,  labeled plants are grown as a demonstration of their use in dyes: red ox blood beet roots, yellow tansy or goldenrod flowers, ochre onion skins, blue woad and false indigo...  A volunteer tells of her surprises using mordants like alum and vinegar.  The understated bronze fennel (the whole plant) will give a clear yellow with a little help from alum, but the bright, hot pink and orange petals of zinnia with give a soft beige or tan.  Sunflower petals may yield yellow or green.  Many of the plants require alum to bring out the full color, such as is used with (rose) madder to make reds.  With bloodroot, a native plant, no mordant will yield an orange color from the roots and adding alum will yield rust.  

All these plants must be harvested at the right time for the right parts.  I may have just missed making blue with my Russian sage, but I'm not going to miss making yellows with some native goldenrod and European tansy flowers!

History and Humble Beginnings: Part One


Thinking locally, I look around in a 100 mile radius at what others are doing to promote biodiversity, but history as well.  We've all driven past gas stations with plastic flower deserts and pharmacy and shopping centers with Stella d'Oro lilies adding color (and nectar for a few), and not much else.  But for all those visible faux pas, there are the less visible but much more viable private and community gardens, even restored historical gardens.

This month I visited a number of gardens in RI and a very special one in Amherst, MA.  Let's start there.  Emily Dickinson, famous after her death for her poetry and reclusiveness, was an avid gardener educated in botany.  She called her garden "controlled chaos" and tended her flowers, herbs, and vegetables by lantern at night, to avoid being disturbed.  It was in her thirties she became more and more reclusive, whittling her world down to the family home and grounds and walks to her brother's home next door.


    





Touring Emily's family home, you could see the Puritan influences.  Emily's bedroom was sparse, with a bed, dresser, wash basin, chamber pot, little heating stove, and of course, her writing desk.  The facsimile wallpaper was a riot of unnamed roses.  There were a few photos and a small painting as well.  The rest of the home contained a parlor with a Wilkinson piano (many family members played) and Aeolian harp (played by the wind), a library that showed they subscribed to Atlantic Monthly, a modest kitchen, etc.

Emily was quite fond of Susan, her sister-in-law, and visited her and the children often.  The Evergreens, as her brother William's house was called, was much more showy: Original and reproduced works from William and Susan Dickinson's European travels, Near East prints and rugs, a kitchen with a pass-through opening to the dining room for servants to deliver food from, a library, a drawing room, bedrooms, servant rooms, and an open porch facing out toward the town.  The porch served almost as a "stage", playing their part as their father was very involved in the town as a lawyer and legislator and in bringing the railroad to Amherst, and his father founded Amherst College.  

 






Perhaps this constant attention on the family lead to Emily's reclusiveness. But for all her simple living, what she had seen and done remained with her.  The train appeared in her poems more than once.  She was only 14 when she started her herbarium, or collection of pressed flowers and herbs meticulously labeled.  She attended what is now Amherst College for 7 years and Mount Holyoke Female Seminary School for a year.  Flowers and herbs, their botanical parts named, insects, snakes and birds, metaphors she didn't have to go far to find to take you on a journey.

The museums are a work in progress.  Since her death in 1848 at the age of 55, both homes have suffered their age, from peeling wallpaper to water damage.  Later owners made changes, which have since been removed.  Cracks in the walls and ceiling have boards screwed into them until proper repairs can be made.

But the work continues.  The great oak tree still stands.  Some trees were lost in a hurricane.  Others had been replaced with a tennis court (now removed).  The orchard Emily's mother tended is being restored.  Baldwin, Westfield, Seek-No-Furthers, and Winter Nelis saplings grow as the soaker hose alleviates the very dry summer this year.  More apple and pear varieties will be planted soon.


Through ground-sounding equipment, the locations of Emily's and sister Lavinia's gardens were discovered.  Volunteers planted what was typical of the time, also identifying plants described in her poetry and collected in her herbarium.  (My next trip up there must include a trip to Harvard's Houghton Library, which holds her 400 plus pressed flowers and plants.)  

Construction of her greenhouse begins this month.

Pokemon Go! RL Version




This week I've been playing my own version of "Pokemon Go!"  It's great getting outside (for any reason).  My adventures do not feature being hit by a car, robbed, falling off a cliff, etc.  Yet adventures they were.


I am in the process of writing a field guide for 15 Minute Field Trips™ featuring pages that give a bit of background on things encountered outdoors.  There's a page on bees, cloud types, measuring instruments, soil, and more, each designed to help people understand and enjoy what they are focusing on.  

In the bee page, I describe the habitats of solitary bees, which includes wood hollows and underground tunnels.  I spent months photographing bees and going through my photos to include some very diverse species found in my garden.  Today, I took it a step further, catching 9 of the 12 or more species I sighted, for further study.  Gotta catch 'em all, they say.  And with tiny species like the perdita and mason bees and metallic ones like certain sweat bees, it's hard enough getting a well-focused image of one, let alone knowing if it's a new one that looks similar to others I've found.

Another reason for all the photos (And collecting insects for more photos), is my licensing dilemma.  I have created a number of info graphics I have started sharing with other educators.  The ABCs of Bees graphic is all my own images.  The Seed Dispersal graphic uses a lot of images from Fotolia.  I have a licensing agreement that allows me to print 500,000 copies of something and use it in presentations, etc., but not allow me to put it online or sell it.  In order to do that, a 70¢ to $1.00 image goes up to a $70 to $150 image.  One of my pages had nine such images.

So...I need to recreate some pages and make up my own image catalog in order to make this field guide and make it available on Amazon.  It's been interesting weather this week, and I've found myself taking pictures of clouds through my car window (not safe, I know), or racing to the baseball field behind my house to get enough distance to photograph the cumulonimbus clouds while also finding a ground hog living in a fractured steel pipe full of plastic water bottles and even a used syringe...  So yes, adventures trying to capture all this images.

So kids, grab a camera or a smart phone, look before you cross the street, and see if you can capture a bee with pollen on its legs, a swallowtail butterfly, a cloud that looks like a turtle...  Make your own list!  Catch 'em all!

Much Ado About Mullein

You see them everywhere in the summer, tall candelabras of yellow flowers and soft, fuzzy leaves.  They're erupting from cracks in the sidewalk.  They line the highways.  They dot wildflower field.  Some even include them in their gardens.

Verbascum thapsus, or mullein, is part of the snapdragon family.  Originally native to Europe and Asia, they are now ubiquitous to North America.  Being drought-tolerant and providing flowers make them a very eco-friendly plant to have.  They starts a rosette of fuzzy leaves, and flower in their second year, before releasing seed to start the cycle anew.  

Mullein provides pollen for bees, butterflies, moths, and beetles.  It provides seeds for birds such as the goldfinch.  Ants, true bugs, earwigs, and other creatures use the plant as food, shelter, and building material.  (Perhaps the wool carder bee likes this plant to line its nest.  It does like my lamb's ear!)  The decomposing leaves at the base also feed pill bugs, who provide a great clean-up service in the garden.

Look at the happy honey bee in the first photo.  In the center, a ladybug, grasshopper, shield bug, and a four-lined plant bug.  Last, mullein in the wildflower field at ASRI Bristol, RI.


Mullein also has many medicinal uses.  I've made a tea of the leaves to use as a demulcent, useful for a phlegmy cough or mild asthma.  The leaves are also anti-inflammatory.  Both leaves and flowers can be used in a tea, the mucilage properties,  soothing irritated membranes, and saponins making coughs more productive.  (Interestingly, saponins cause respiratory arrest in fish.)  Some Native Americans have used the roots as well.

The stalk has been used to start fires and may have been used as a wick in Roman candles.  Ancient Romans called it "hag's taper."  It's also been called candlewick, bunny's ear, and flannel leaf, Jacob’s staff, Jupiter’s staff and Aaron’s rod.  Kids love to pet it.  My kid uses the leaves to make sleeping bags for her Barbies.

Two Free Insects Lectures

I will be doing two free lectures coming up.  (Both are the same, so pick which one is more convenient for you.)  The first is July 14th 7 p.m. at the Greene Public Library in Coventry.  The second is at 6 p.m. July 21st at the E. Smithfield Public Library.

Insects in the Garden 

What was that bug?  Insects are part of gardening, and knowing which ones are beneficial and which are pests will help you take the best advantage of them.  There are over 4000 types of bees in North America and many are in crisis!  There are over a billion beetle species.  Learn about a few good ones and a few you should look out for.  Join Melissa Guillet as she helps you identify several common insects, which herbs and flowers will attract beneficials or deter pests, even how to raise butterflies!  Live and preserved specimens will be available for examination.  (Don't worry, nothing that bites!)
